NOTHING WITHOUT YOU (2004)

Ted stood there in the 100 degree heat of the Nevada desert. He had NOTHING. No food. No water. No shelter. No clothes. He wanted to see if the extraordinary and temporary community known as Burning Man would not only help him survive a week in the harsh desert, but if they would interact with his "theme camp" on a much more complex level. What he got in return is a testament to the generosity of the human spirit. This remarkable experiment was called NOTHING WITHOUT YOU. The winner of three "Best Documentary" awards including the Jury prize at the Malibu Film Festival and the Audience Choice at the Artivist Film Festival in Hollywood, NOTHING WITHOUT YOU has been lauded for its boldness, sincerity, inspiration and humor. This unique documentary takes the audience on an amazing journey of vulnerability and will serve as a vital catalyst for classroom discussion (Brief Nudity/No Sex). (52 min. SHOOTING STARS

Millions of people across the globe are HIV+, and the numbers continue to increase. Although treatments for AIDS have improved, there still is no cure for this devastating disease. Tragically, improved medications have created a false sense of security: risky sexual behaviors and consequent HIV infections are increasing, especially in young, urban populations, both straight and gay. Produced and directed by Roberta Pyzel, SHOOTING STARS is a lively and honest portrait of eight men in group therapy living with AIDS. With candidness and courage, humor and love for each other, the men in this group show us all the dimensions of AIDS at its deepest emotional/spiritual levels as well as its effects on basic day-to-day living. Powerful insights about living with a life-threatening illness give this film universal significance as well. It is as crucial today that AIDS and its real effects be taken seriously as it was in 1994 when the 8 men in this group were originally videotaped.

BACK TO THE VILLAGE (2006)

(For Economics, Cultural Studies and South Asian Studies)
South Indian villages have been an almost closed world unto themselves for centuries …..this is no longer the case. Globalization has paved the way for cheap imports, handicrafts have been replaced by plastic goods, with the consequent loss of livelihood. Less land, less water, and a massive population growth is forcing millions of villagers into the cities in search of work. While the south Indian city of Bangalore has been lauded as the world’s new IT capital, there is a dark side: two million slum dwellers, one quarter of its population, doesn’t have running water let alone a computer. A thought provoking documentary film BACK TO THE VILLAGE focuses on the causes and results of rural-urban migration, a phenomenon that is strangling capitals in filth and its dwellers in misery in the developing world, as governments, pushed on by investment, in India and elsewhere, rush to build industrial centres, draining much needed funding to the rural sector. The film is also a study of resilient Indian people, and age-old friendships, and takes us on a journey, where we experience the survival strategies for several rural societies, through the eyes of villagers themselves.

(For Religious Studies & Cultural Studies Programs)
Produced & narrated by Anna Wilding, www.buddhawild.com, Buddha Wild provides viewers with a well-judged glimpse into the monastery world of the Buddhist Monk and the real world of those who follow the precepts and principals of Buddhism. The documentary centers on the life of the Buddhist monks. They are a kind lot of warm hearted and enlightened men who are eager to share their religious doctrines of faith. Buddha Wild is a journey of discovery. The monks are honest in the telling of their lives, hopes, and disappointments. They speak freely about their lives, limitedly about the absence of physical closeness and sexual activity, and in depth about the world challenges faced by a Buddhist. The monks were clearly enamored by Ms. Wilding and their generosity of information from taboo subjects exhibits this fact. It appears that being a monk is not so much a calling as a culture. There is a break from the seriousness of the narration with the invitation by one of the Monk’s to visit his hut – hence the title “The Monk in a Hut.”

The result was ‘Jazz Bridges: Music Without Frontiers’, a concert film depicting the meeting of two very different styles of musical genre: Western (American) Jazz and Eastern (Afghan) Folk. The film contains interesting interviews which explore the difference in attitudes and perceptions between the musicians. The Western musicians were the first to play in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban; the Eastern musicians, Afghanistan’s pre-eminent folk ensemble, were banned from playing music for years under the Taliban. The result is a fusion of styles that is rarely communicated on camera.
