The bitter struggles for freedom in Bosnia and Rwanda are the backdrop for first 2 installments on the importance of History in shaping national identity. In Bosnia, where memories of conflict are still very fresh children are growing up with a one-sided account of History. In multi ethnic towns schools are divided and in the same building Croat children are taught in seperate classrooms from Muslims. In Rwanda, for eight years following the 1994 genocide, history was not taught in Rwandan schools. Over the last 4 years, historians and educators have tried to re-introduce history into the curriculum with limited success. The problem is that history has been so manipulated to justify political actions that impartial accounts of Rwanda’s history are very hard to come by. Started by the Belgian Administration 150 years ago and then inflamed by Hutu figure heads for the last 50 years, the social structure of Rwanda has been divided into Tutsi elite and Hutu labourers. Archaeologists are finding evidence to prove that this division into distinct ethnic groups was never the case.

SURVIVING HISTORY presents the life stories of seven individuals who survived the Holocaust in Lithuania, where ninety-five percent of the 240,000-strong pre-war Jewish population was annihilated, many at the hands of Lithuanian shooters. The narrators represent a rapidly diminishing community. Today, approximately 2,800 Jews live in what was once known as the "Jerusalem of the North." Of this number, there are only one hundred and six ghetto and camp survivors and less than one hundred former partisans and soldie rs. In most cases, they are the lone survivors among extended families of over one hundred people to have come through alive. Even today, more than sixty years on from the atrocities, as Vilnius takes on the role of European capitol of culture, these individuals face horrific echoes of the past: a recent Neo-Nazi march through the city, the Jewish community center defaced, last August, by images of Swastikas, smokestacks and gallows, a palpable surge in Anti-Semitic rhetoricThe film explores their stories, taking us into the heart of their memories, but it also looks at the specific time and place in which we encounter them and discovers that which is meaningful to them today. People from all over Ethiopia and many Ethiopian who had emigrated abroad flocked to the capital, as Ethiopia ushers in the new Millennium - Seven years after much of the world marked the beginning of the 21st century, Ethiopia is finally approaching the year 2000, thanks to a unique and ancient system of measuring time. A variation on the archaic Julian calendar -- which started disappearing from the West in the 16th century -- means Ethiopia did not enter the year 2000 until September 1, 2007. In the 16th Century, as the rest of Christendom revised its estimate of the date of the birth of Christ - Ethiopia stuck with the old date, which means it was stuck more than seven years behind the rest of the world. Ethiopia is known for its colorful ancient history and rich heritage. And because it was never colonised, Ethiopia has always had a special significance for the rest of Africa.
