VISIBLE MEMORIES (2004)

The issue of self-injury is surrounded by stigma and misunderstanding. Such behaviour is often labelled as attention seeking or, mistakenly, as attempted suicide. Produced in the UK by Mind In Croydin -- a significant provider of mental health services -- VISIBLE MEMORIES allows people who self-injure to describe their experiences. They tell us some of the reasons why they self-injure and what approaches they find helpful or unhelpful. Setting self-injury in a more general context of self-harm, the film argues that such behaviour is a valid coping mechanism for dealing with internal emotional distress, and that consequently, the challenge for those who do not self-injure is to come to terms with their own feelings in relating to those who do. CIGARETTES & FRESH AIR (2005)

(for Nursing, Gerontology and Sociology Programs) Produced and directed by filmmaker Brian McDermott CIGARETTES & FRESH AIR is an outstanding example of compassionate filmmaking. Inside this fictional assisted living facility, we are introduced to familiar characters who are not easily lovable, but who earn our respect with their integrity. The film takes us to a place we don't want to go, one that makes us uncomfortable, but it's place where millions of American seniors do go: the institutionalized aging. CIGARETTES & FRESH AIR raises our reluctant sights to the reality of how many of us live and die in America, and maybe why we should care before we get there. The beauty of the cinematography helps us keep on looking, the subtext is gentle but firm, and the structure is irresistible. CIGARETTES & FRESH AIR is a film that as an educational tool will certainly promote discussion in nursing and gerontology settings.

GETTING OFF (2005)

(For Women's Studies, Human Sexuality & Psychology Programs)
A gut-wrenching confessional that mixes sex and emotional violence with insight and redemption, GETTING OFF is a remarkable film from Director Julie Lynch that explores the dark side of sexuality from a woman's perspective. Lynch, who abandoned a career on Wall Street to pursue a career in film, describes GETTING OFF as a psychological drama about what its like to be a woman who doesn't own her own body. The story of a rape survivor, GETTING OFF is both provocative and sensitive, as it exposes the truth about women's relationships to sex, to men, and to each other. "I think every female undergraduate should watch this [film]. After doing this for so many years, you come in contact with so many different victims. To me this just really captured it."--Capt. Bob Staehle, Operations Commander, University of South Florida Police Department/ Nudity, Adult Language & Violence

HARD TO BELIEVE (2004)

(For Psychology & Mental Health programs) A person's Spirituality (whether or not it involves religious beliefs) influences strongly how they see themselves in the world and society. It is now recognised that peoples' Spirituality is an area that mental health services may have ignored or overlooked in the past. Some staff feel out of their depth in this area, some see such beliefs as being symptoms of mental ill health, and some may feel that religious beliefs have harmed people. It is also the case that some people from Faith communities lack knowledge and understanding of mental health issues, even though there is evidence that spiritual well-being is an integral part of good mental health. A documentary about spirituality and mental health, HARD TO BELIEVE tells the story of three service users, how their Spirituality was perceived by mental health services, and the role that Spirituality has played as part of their recovery. Produced in the UK by Mind In Croydin -- a significant provider of mental health services -- HARD TO BELIEVE explores models of good practice in terms of how mental health services can work better to meet peoples' spiritual needs and also how faith communities can develop a better understanding of mental health problems and thus support people in their community who may be experiencing such difficulties. FROM THE BODY CAGE (2007)

(For Health Sciences & Women's Studies Programs)
From the Body Cage offers an insider's view to the paradoxical logic of bulimia nervosa. It is the first film on eating disorders made by insiders to the issue – and the first film to attempt a portrayal of the sheer state of mind of a sufferer. Highly experimental, the film uses actors, music and text in a collage like structure, constituting a visual poem that exposes the very emotions of eating disorders. But there is also a universal aspect to the story as the struggles portrayed in FROM THE BODY CAGE represent eternal human struggles: defining and losing one's sense of self, feeling judged, trying to be the best one can be and fearing the emergence of one's evil alter ego. It is this aspect that makes it ultimately possible for anyone to empathize, and almost forget for a second that it is all about food. Or - is it? Praised by Eating Disorder Prevention Programs, the film captures the private psychological battles seen by experts in many of the college students see suffering from bulimia.
