THANATOS Rx: The Death Penalty Debate in America Produced in 2001 and revised in 2005 by producer and forensic psychologist, Dr. Maryanne Galvin, THANATOS Rx presents an even-handed, nonpartisan examination of the many facets of the death penalty debate in America today. The 59 minute documentary journeys goes beyond myopic sound bites and static polls to a deeply personal exploration of the debate. Interspersed with powerful and rare archival footage and original photographs are exclusive interviews with those most touched by Capital Punishment. Innocence, deterrence, retribution and closure for families of homicide victims are some the topics examined through the eyes of a "volunteer" on Federal Death Row and a murderer who narrowly escaped the electric chair in Massachusetts. Interviews with families of murder victims, District Attorneys and legal scholars at prestigious law schools, The Innocence Project and Amnesty International serve to illustrate the emotional complexities of the issue.(Price $79.95 S&H $8.95)

HOPE

(Asian Studies, Religious Studies & History Programs) Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual practice based on the universal principles of truth, compassion, and forbearance. In 1999, the Chinese government banned this practice. Many of millions of practitioners were jailed and beaten. Even some were persecuted to death. HOPE is the story of one man from Canada who was destined to go to Tiananmen Square to appeal for Falun Gong with other practitioners from more than a dozen countries. He knew the dangers of traveling to Beijing. However, his determination to help spread the truth surpassed even his fear for his safety and the safety of his fellow Falun Gong practitioners.

SURVIVING HISTORY (2009)

(For Justice Studies & History Programs)
SURVIVING HISTORY presents the life stories of seven individuals who survived the Holocaust in Lithuania, where ninety-five percent of the 240,000-strong pre-war Jewish population was annihilated, many at the hands of Lithuanian shooters. The narrators represent a rapidly diminishing community. Today, approximately 2,800 Jews live in what was once known as the "Jerusalem of the North." Of this number, there are only one hundred and six ghetto and camp survivors and less than one hundred former partisans and soldie rs. In most cases, they are the lone survivors among extended families of over one hundred people to have come through alive. Even today, more than sixty years on from the atrocities, as Vilnius takes on the role of European capitol of culture, these individuals face horrific echoes of the past: a recent Neo-Nazi march through the city, the Jewish community center defaced, last August, by images of Swastikas, smokestacks and gallows, a palpable surge in Anti-Semitic rhetoricThe film explores their stories, taking us into the heart of their memories, but it also looks at the specific time and place in which we encounter them and discovers that which is meaningful to them today. Juxtaposing the historical and the contemporary, the private and the personal, it offers a lyrical, poetic, and, at once, harrowing journey through the core of Lithuanian Jewish life.
