HIGH, FAST and WONDERFUL

A personal documentary from forensic psychologist/producer Maryanne Galvin that approaches faith from a Western Judeo-Christian angle minus the religious overtones, HIGH, FAST and WONDERFUL explores the personal cultural and spiritual ramifications of individuals seeking respite in some very unusual places from life's tragedies in an attempt to rekindle their faith. HARD TO BELIEVE (2004)

(For Psychology & Mental Health programs) A person's Spirituality (whether or not it involves religious beliefs) influences strongly how they see themselves in the world and society. It is now recognised that peoples' Spirituality is an area that mental health services may have ignored or overlooked in the past. Some staff feel out of their depth in this area, some see such beliefs as being symptoms of mental ill health, and some may feel that religious beliefs have harmed people. It is also the case that some people from Faith communities lack knowledge and understanding of mental health issues, even though there is evidence that spiritual well-being is an integral part of good mental health. A documentary about spirituality and mental health, HARD TO BELIEVE tells the story of three service users, how their Spirituality was perceived by mental health services, and the role that Spirituality has played as part of their recovery. Produced in the UK by Mind In Croydin -- a significant provider of mental health services -- HARD TO BELIEVE explores models of good practice in terms of how mental health services can work better to meet peoples' spiritual needs and also how faith communities can develop a better understanding of mental health problems and thus support people in their community who may be experiencing such difficulties. Edwards directed and produced the film, which was inspired by McClenon's book, also called “Wondrous Healing.” The documentary explores phenomena such as hypnotic and placebo effects, extrasensory perception and 'hallucinations of bereavement,' in which those who have lost loved ones have claimed the dead have visited them in the afterlife. More than 100 people were interviewed, including medical doctors and lawyers. "I hope this film helps people understand this important component to health," McClenon said. BUDDHA WILD:

BUDDHA WILD: THE MONK IN A HUT (2008)
(For Religious Studies & Cultural Studies Programs)
Produced & narrated by Anna Wilding, www.buddhawild.com, Buddha Wild provides viewers with a well-judged glimpse into the monastery world of the Buddhist Monk and the real world of those who follow the precepts and principals of Buddhism. The documentary centers on the life of the Buddhist monks. They are a kind lot of warm hearted and enlightened men who are eager to share their religious doctrines of faith. Buddha Wild is a journey of discovery. The monks are honest in the telling of their lives, hopes, and disappointments. They speak freely about their lives, limitedly about the absence of physical closeness and sexual activity, and in depth about the world challenges faced by a Buddhist. The monks were clearly enamored by Ms. Wilding and their generosity of information from taboo subjects exhibits this fact. It appears that being a monk is not so much a calling as a culture. There is a break from the seriousness of the narration with the invitation by one of the Monk’s to visit his hut – hence the title “The Monk in a Hut.”

GAIA & GENESIS (2009)

(For Religious Studies & Environmental Studies)
This DVD from the British producer of SEX & ETHICS contains 5 short films on environmental ethics. Gaia -- By comparing the life of the planet to the life of a 45 year old woman, Gaia takes us on a breathtaking journey from our beginnings to these last few seconds of biological time which have witnessed our meteoric rise to ascendancy - but at what cost? Genesis -- For 2.000 years, the Genesis injunction to have dominion over nature has been misinterpreted as a licence to dominate at all costs. But while Christianity might have been more concerned with saving souls than with saving seals is it solely to blame for today's environmental crisis? Stewards & Slayers -- Western civilization has largely ignored Biblical and mystic calls to revere creation and today we face the stark realization that in an interdependent world unethical stewardship of the animal kingdom ultimately afflicts us all. The Rapture--- Christian fundamentalists believe that the environmental disasters we currently face are of little concern as they are signs that the Rapture is close at hand...for others however, visions of the end time have given new impetus to the principle of stewardship. All Things Are Connected --- While Christian colonisers, mapmakers, missionaries and mercenaries, believed that the natural world existed entirely for human gain, the indigenous Indians of the Americas experienced nature as a sacred web of interdependent phenomena.
